About

Malin started her PhD in 2018, working on the conflicts over goose management in Sweden. During recent decades goose numbers have increased dramatically, in Sweden, NW Europe, and North America. Today, more geese than ever occur close to man, leading to wide-spread conflict. Abundant geese compromise airport security, impact natural vegetation, and cause eutrophication by transferring nutrients from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems. Geese have also become generally less fearful of man, creating conflict due to boldness and littering in parks and residential areas. However, the most significant conflict over geese is on agricultural land, where their grazing leads to wide-spread crop damage. Although only a fraction of this damage is reimbursed by society, in Sweden the annual cost is much higher than that for livestock killed by carnivores. The overall aim of her research is to evaluate methods to minimize grazing damage by scaring or by sacrificial fields, in order to provide guidelines towards which techniques are most effective in terms of cost versus effect.
